Would-Be Colorado Cop Killer Suspected of New Mexico Serial Rapes

Investigators have used DNA evidence to link a man accused of trying to kill a Pueblo, Colo., police officer and his family last month to the series of "Ether Man" rapes spanning two decades in New Mexico and Texas.

Robert H. Bruce, 47, was arrested by New Mexico authorities Monday in Pueblo and is being held on a $3 million bond.

Bruce, who has been jailed since Oct. 6 on a failure-to-appear warrant, allegedly attempted to murder a Pueblo police officer who was to testify against him in a peeping Tom case. He was indicted Friday in five New Mexico rape cases and is suspected of at least five more.

According to the arrest warrant served on Bruce Monday, he also is being investigated for 13 counts of rape; nine counts of kidnapping, nine counts of aggravated burglary; and eight counts of aggravated battery.
