Judges Reject California Plan to Cut Prison Crowding

The panel said California officials had failed to comply with their order to produce a plan to pare the number of state prisoners by 40,000 within two years. The judges agreed to postpone a decision on a request by inmates' lawyers to hold Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in contempt of court for defying the earlier order, issued Aug. 4.

Norte Valle Cartel Kingpin Heads to Prison For 45 Years

A U.S. district judge sentenced the Columbian drug kingpin and former FBI top ten fugitive Diego Montoya Sanchez to a 45-year prison term. Montoya Sanchez, whose alias was "Don Diego," had entered a guilty plea to murder and cocaine trafficking.

Sell-Crack-or-Die Defense is Now 0 for 2

Rigoberto Valle testified recently in San Francisco court that he was told that he must sell crack or face death by gun or knife. The jury didn't buy the Honduran immigrant's "sell crack or die" defense, convicting him. Soon he'll be sentenced, and probably deported.

Gang Leader Preyed On Children, Prosecutor Says

The last defendant to be sentenced in the sweeping federal case against the Insane Deuces street gang of Aurora, Ill., was sentenced Thursday to the maximum 20 years in prison after a prosecutor described him as an enforcer who "sent children out to kill other children."

Arizona Jury Labels Hells Angels as Criminal Gang

For the first time in Arizona, Hells Angels members are being called a gang in the eyes of the courts. A recent felony assault conviction for a Hells Angel gang member resulted in a Maricopa County Superior Court jury also labeling the Hells Angels a criminal street gang.

Massive Police Raid Targets Brutal L.A. Gang

Los Angeles cop Juan Aguilar has been battling the Avenues hoodlums long enough to have seen the gang at its most vicious. During his five years working an anti-gang detail on streets the Avenues claim as their own in the city's northeastern reaches, gang members are accused of gunning down a man in broad daylight as he held his 2-year-old granddaughter's hand, opening fire on LAPD officers with an assault rifle and killing a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy.

Dropouts Cost California $1 Billion in Juvenile Crime Costs
