Are You a Coward?
May 14, 2012
That oath did not spare the lives of some officers who failed to live up to it. I will refrain from listing their names herein as they have already paid the ultimate price for their reticence to do what obviously had to be done.

In Defense of George Zimmerman
May 3, 2012
Politicians and law enforcement administrators often credit law enforcement with the safety enjoyed in nicer neighborhoods. We don't deserve the credit. Safe neighborhoods are not made so by quality policing.

Why Budgets Matter
April 24, 2012
Some officers don't think budgets affect them, so why should they care? I've even heard budgets compared to diets. Seriously? Budgets are important in every aspect of our lives. Ignoring them doesn't change their importance. Inaction may cause panic.

Video: A Book Review, Dumbass Video, and Two Rants
April 19, 2012

Put It in Writing
April 12, 2012
Your written product is often the single most tangible evidence of the work that you do, and if your readership falls off, it will result in unfiled cases, lackluster evaluations, and a generally all-around crappy reputation among your co-workers.

Four Ways To Build Trust After Trayvon Martin
April 6, 2012
The Trayvon Martin tragedy has made it clear that the relationship between many African Americans and officers is still based on suspicion and mistrust. Despite so much progress, a small crack of a possible action or inaction from a single officer or agency quickly brings on a national torrent of anger and frustration.

Trayvon Martin: The Gunfire Next Time
April 4, 2012
For a yoctosecond, I found myself initially jumping on the P.C. bandwagon believing that if Trayvon was white that he'd still be jabbering on his cell phone today. But as the back and forth allegations of "racist shooting" and "slanted media bias" gained momentum, I wondered if the string-pulling puppeteers of the three-ring big top—CBS, NBC, and ABC—hadn't gotten the better of me.

Two Calif. Chiefs Helm Same Departments as Their Dads
March 28, 2012
The four men say being police chiefs of the same cities is a source of pride. They also say that because law enforcement has changed so much over the last few decades, their jobs have little in common beyond the title.
