An off-duty deputy with the San Bernardino (CA) County Sheriff's Department was killed in a traffic collision in the early morning hours on Sunday.

The agency said on Facebook, "It is with deep sadness that we report the sudden and tragic death of Deputy Nicholas O'Loughlin."

Shortly after midnight, units from the Chino Police Department responded to a report of a traffic collision. When they arrived, they discovered O'Loughlin's vehicle had been struck by another vehicle. The collision is under investigation and the other driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

The agency said that O'Loughlin joined the department in July 2017 and was assigned to the West Valley Detention Center.

"Nicholas left a positive impression on his friends and coworkers and will be deeply missed," the Facebook post said.

O'Loughlin is survived by his father Bill, mother Crystal, and brother Jonathan.
