Northern California Deputy Critically Wounded in Shooting

Deputies say the man was “uncooperative” and opened fire. The deputies returned fire. One deputy was shot and the suspect was also hit and retreated into the van.

A Placer County (California) Sheriff’s Office deputy is in critical condition following a shooting in Colfax on Thursday night, the agency reports on Facebook. The suspect was killed in the exchange of fire.

The incident began around 11 p.m. with deputies in a McDonald’s parking lot checking out a van that matched the description of one used in a burglary, the sheriff’s office said. They contacted a white man in his 30s who was in the van.

Deputies say the man was “uncooperative” and opened fire. The deputies returned fire. One deputy was shot and the suspect was also hit and retreated into the van.

The wounded deputy was transported to the hospital by fellow deputies.

The agency’s Special Enforcement Team responded to the “barricaded suspect” and found the the man dead in the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
